Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle

Healthy Kids Georgia

“As Lt. Governor I am gravely concerned with Georgia’s ever increasing childhood obesity rates.  By third grade nearly a quarter of children in Georgia are considered obese, and almost half of children ages 10 to 14 fail to meet the national recommended level of physical activity.  It’s time we reverse these trends.”

Childhood obesity in Georgia has reached an epidemic level, and the health risks associated with obesity can lead to serious physical and emotional consequences for our children.  Health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure and low self-esteem all have the effect of holding our children back and keeping them from reaching their true potential.  Georgia's youth deserve to be given the tools to live a happy and healthy life, and we have the opportunity through our schools to lead by example in teaching our children wellness and proper nutrition.

Healthy Kids Georgia:

The Lt. Governor’s “Healthy Kids Georgia” program is a collaboration with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation to increase awareness and participation in their Healthy Schools Program.  With this challenge, we will reach out to educational leaders across Georgia to implement health and wellness programs in our schools.  In addition, we want to recognize schools that are already leaders in promoting healthy behavior and share their success with others.

As Lt. Governor, I want to challenge our superintendants, principals, and parents to help create healthier environments in their schools by becoming a  part of the Healthy Schools Program.  I will personally recognize every school that enrolls in this program for their commitment to healthy kids.  I encourage you to sign your school up today and help us meet our goal of 50 new schools by the end of this year. I am confident with leadership and motivation across Georgia we can change the culture surrounding health and physical fitness in our schools.

Alliance for Healthy Generation’s Healthy Schools Program:

The Healthy Schools Program is an initiative of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a national non-profit founded in 2005 by the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation. One of the country’s most extensive childhood obesity prevention efforts, Healthy Schools Program schools are making significant changes in the areas of healthy eating, physical activity and staff wellness to help tomorrow’s generation be healthier. The Healthy Schools Program provides assistance at no cost – guiding participants to resources that help them make healthy changes in nutrition, physical activity and health education so students and staff can lead healthier lives.

The Healthy Schools Program works with more than 9,000 schools across the United States, including more than 200 schools in Georgia. In 2010, 13 Georgia schools received National Recognition Awards from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation for their work transforming their campuses into healthier places for students and staff.
